I have always been a big fan of Scott Adams – the well-known American cartoonist and writer. Whether it is his famous The Dilbert Principle of the 1990s wherein he stated that “the companies tend to systematically promote their least-competent employees to management (generally middle management) in order to limit the amount of damage they are capable of doing“, or his subsequent sarcastic portrayals of the white-collar mindset in modern corporations – he has always been hard-hitting while keeping humor intact in his every communication. No wonder there is hardly any business school in the world that does not refer to Dilbert while teaching management lessons.
In my corporate career of twenty years, Dilbert has often resonated very well with my real-life experiences. It has also given a reason to smile, ignore imperfections and move on. Here are some of my favorite picks – as my tribute to this legendary cartoonist!
